A Queueing Analysis to Determine How Many Additional Beds Are Needed for the Detention and Removal of Illegal Aliens
نویسندگان
چکیده
Due to lack of detention capacity, tens of thousands of apprehended illegal aliens are released into the U.S. interior each year instead of being removed. We construct a queueing model of the detention and removal operations and estimate the model parameters using 2003 data from the U.S. Government. While current funding is for approximately 21,000 detention beds, we estimate that approximately 35,000 beds are needed to remove all apprehended illegal aliens based on 2003 arrival rates of detainees. The significant increase from 2003 to 2004 in the arrivals of detainees suggests that more than 35,000 beds may be required in the near future. ∗Graduate School of Business, Stanford University, Stanford, CA 94305, [email protected] †Institute for Computational and Mathematical Engineering, Stanford University, Stanford, CA, 94305, [email protected]

Analyzing the homeland security of the U.S.-Mexico border.
We develop a mathematical optimization model at the intersection of homeland security and immigration, that chooses various immigration enforcement decision variables to minimize the probability that a terrorist can successfully enter the United States across the U.S.-Mexico border. Included are a discrete choice model for the probability that a potential alien crosser will attempt to cross the...
متن کاملThe Optimal Number of Hospital Beds Under Uncertainty: A Costs Management Approach
Equipping hospital beds uses a great deal of a hospital''''s resources. Therefore, it is essential to consider the hospital beds'''' efficiency. To increase its efficiency, a fuzzy unrestricted model for managing hospital expenses is presented in this paper. The lack of beds in hospitals leads to patients’ admission loss and consecutively profit loss. On the other hand, increasing the bed count...
متن کاملM M m K Queue With Additional Servers and Discouragement (RESEARCH NOTE)
Waiting in long queue is undesirable due to which in some practical situations customers become impatient and leave the system. In such cases providing additional servers can reduce long queue. This investigation deals with multi-server queueing system with additional servers and discouragement. The customers arrive in poisson fashion and are served exponentially by a pool of permanent and addi...

To address this, I suggest, we must not only break the silence about the extent of wrongdoing in the health sector, but also talk differe...
متن کاملDiscrete Time Analysis of Multi-Server Queueing System with Multiple Working Vacations and Reneging of Customers
This paper analyzes a discrete-time $Geo/Geo/c$ queueing system with multiple working vacations and reneging in which customers arrive according to a geometric process. As soon as the system gets empty, the servers go to a working vacations all together. The service times during regular busy period, working vacation period and vacation times are assumed to be geometrically distributed. Customer...
